Outdoor Lantern Lighting

Lanterns evoke memories of days gone by before the invention of electricity. Outdoor lantern lighting is a beautiful way to incorporate this lighting into an outdoor lighting plan. For many years outdoor lanterns were hard to incorporate into an outdoor lighting plan because they rusted in the rain. However, technology and newer inventions in compounds to protect metal from rust have made the lantern a popular choice in wall mounted lighting and hanging lights for outdoor use.

One type of outdoor lantern that is popular is the copper lanterns that are made in the Carolinas. These lights are made in the same fashion as those found in historic Charleston. These lanterns can be wall mounted, hanging or post type lights that fit into any landscape plan. Brushed nickel is another metal that is a popular choice in outdoor lanterns. Brushed nickel can make a stunning visual statement and add beauty to any are of the landscape.

Outdoor lanterns make great entryway lighting options that are both functional as an entry light and beautiful enough to be ornamental and serve as a decorative purpose as well. Outdoor lanterns can be solar powered, electric, or for a more authentic touch they can be gas powered and have a beautiful natural flame for light.

If natural gas and a flame are the option chosen for light, the homeowner should make sure that it is installed by a professional who knows how to safely perform the install. Lanterns with gas flames should be mounted where they will not come in contact with anything flammable.

Other lantern types are hung on posts similar to shepherd’s hooks. These can be placed strategically around walkways and used to light the way to the front door of the home. Solar and electrical versions are available. Solar versions of the lantern are easier to install and can be moved if necessary without having to call for professional help.

Post mounted lanterns can be installed around pools or patios to add lighting for families and guests to enjoy the night. The lanterns can be ordered to fit the existing poles or railing spindles. This installation helps to make the lanterns appear to be built-in to the existing construction.

Outdoor lanterns lend a special touch of beauty to any outdoor lighting plan. They are reminiscent of olden days and create a stunning visual effect, especially when they are installed using natural gas for the flame.
