Outdoor Patio Lights

Designing a landscape lighting plan for a new or existing home can be a daunting task for some people. Without the help of a professional landscape architect the placement of lights to create dramatic effects is simply not worth the time involved for the layperson. However, the use of outdoor patio lights is a simple plan that can create a beautiful evening retreat without an immense amount of work.

Patios are typically an extension of the home that is used for cookouts and family gatherings. Often there are comfortable seating arrangements and the atmosphere is one of relaxation. Without a source of lighting the fun has to end when darkness falls; however, the installation of patio lights will allow the good times to linger on into the night.

During construction there is usually at least one light added to the patio near the doors. This is usually a wall mounted light to allow homeowners to be able to see outside at night. This is usually not enough light to have gatherings and other lighting is necessary.

Outdoor pool and deck lighting

There are many different options for adding lighting to the outdoor patio area, some more difficult and expensive than others add. The easiest form of lighting for the outdoor area is tiki torches, which can be removed whenever, desired. These create a beach-like atmosphere and often include bug repellent to ward off mosquitoes. These are easily removed and stored when they are not in use.

Rope lighting is another type of lighting that can be permanent or temporary. These lights can be wrapped around the patio banisters or permanently attached using hardware to keep them in place. Rope lighting creates a beautiful star-like effect. If there are hedges or shrubbery around the patio, rope lighting can be added in them for even more light.

If permanent lighting is desired there are several options available. Hanging lanterns or wall-mounted lights can be used for brighter light. Lanterns can be either wall-mounted or hanging on installed pole mounts.

If the patio has covered roof there are even more options in lighting. Homeowners can put in a ceiling fan with light attachment or choose a more elegant lighting with an outdoor safe chandelier. Ceiling mounted lights are available in a wide variety of styles, from flush mounted lights to hanging pendent lights, all of which bring their own style to the patio.

No matter what type of lighting is installed to light the patio a dimmer switch should be installed when possible. This won’t apply to tiki torches of course but with most other options there should be a way to have a dimmer. A dimmer switch allows for mood setting by turning up or down the amount of light.

Outdoor patio lighting can create a romantic mood for couples or light up the night for a family gathering. There are permanent and temporary options that can be mixed and matched to create just the right ambience. Homeowners can enjoy their patio past dusk and well into the night.
