Outdoor Pole Lighting

Traditional landscape lighting plans nearly always incorporate an outdoor light post into the design. The light post is one of the earliest forms of outdoor lighting to be used and can be traced back to days of lighting with fire and lanterns. The post was simply the easiest place to hang the lantern or attach a torch light.

Post lighting has come a long way throughout the years, evolving with the invention of electricity and more recently solar power and fiber optics. Homeowners who do not want an elaborate landscape lighting plan will nearly always opt for an outdoor light post to illuminate their driveway or path to their front door.

What was once merely a metal or wooden pole with a light fixture attached is now available in ornate designs that not only provide light but are also aesthetically pleasing. These posts are available in a variety of materials from cast iron to bronze, stainless steel and more. Additionally, there are more choices in design than ever before. No longer does the post have to be a simple, cylindrical tube standing in the ground. There are now light posts that are available in other geometric shapes. If the homeowner can imagine it there is sure to be someone who can design and create it.

Outdoor light posts can be decorated with etched in carvings to create works of art that light up the yard after dusk or they can be outfitted with ornate lighting kits that range from whimsical and fun to classical and elegant. Homeowners can match their lamp posts to their yard decor or to their home design. There are many different options available to explore.

In addition to being an ornamental feature for the yard, outdoor post lighting has always been used as a security feature. Neighborhood streets are safer at night due to the city or town installing outdoor dusk to dawn lighting in residential areas. Utility companies normally offer an outdoor post light for residential homes to add safety lighting to remote areas of the yard for a nominal fee. This use of outdoor lighting goes beyond appearance and directly affects the safety of the homeowner and residents in the community.

Outdoor post lighting is both an eye-pleasing addition to the landscape and a safety feature that all homes should have. The wide range of designs makes it possible for the homeowner to add this important functional piece to the yard without detracting from the home’s beauty. From simple cylinder poles to ornate cast iron pieces of art, pole lighting leads the way home in the dark of night.
