Creating a garden path light is important for safety reasons but it is also aesthetically enhancing to your home’s landscape. Visitors who come to your house can see to walk from their car to the front door using garden path lights.

Adding light to the garden path is a simple project that can be accomplished by the typical homeowner and usually in the time frame of one afternoon, unless there are multiple paths that require more time.

Garden path lights come in a variety of styles. You can use recessed lighting with the focal point being on the path pavers for a softer lighting style. Using recessed lighting is a very soft design that can be enhanced using colored bulbs.

Moonstones are another option for path lighting. These LED lights are encased in a frosted covering giving them the appearance of soft glowing stones. Moonstones are available that support large amounts of weight and can be used as the actual pathway stone.

Post lighting is another popular option for the garden path light. Depending on how many path lights you want you can opt for full size post lights and space them further apart than you would smaller ones. Smaller post lights, around knee height should be spaced closer together than the full height lights. This allows for more of the light to focus on the pathway.

Rope lights are another garden path light option that creates a unique visual effect. Rope lights for paths are typically encased in heavy duty plastic or other clear weather-proof tubing. These are then placed around the pathway flat against the ground to provide a continual light that follows the path completely. This type lighting is at its visual best when used around long or intricately designed paths, as the light outlines the shape.

Being on a tight budget doesn’t mean foregoing your garden path light. Solar powered path lights are available at the local home and garden shops that are very inexpensive. They too come in a variety of sizes, those the most common do-it-yourself kits are mid-knee height and are staked for easy installation.

Another option when budgets are of great concern is to use lights with more brightness such as a floodlight or spotlight focused directly on the path. This provides ample light without a large investment.

Placement

Garden path lights should be placed not only in main walkways leading from the drive but throughout the lawn and garden area to provide light and show the way to guests. If you have water features such as ponds or a pool you will also want to make sure these have ample lighting to prevent guests from accidentally falling into the pool.

You can also place garden path lights along the edge of the drive way to show vehicles how to enter and exit the drive without mishap. These lights are again a visually appealing part of the overall landscape.

Garden path lights are important for safety reasons and are an enhancement to your overall lawn and garden design. Shining into the night, your garden path lights will lead your guests to your door and beyond.
